I used to be your typical longhaired rocker. I stayed up until 4 a.m. and slept all afternoon. I ate nothing but fast-food burgers, fries and milkshakes, and it really showed. Fast food was my only happiness, and I got sort of a thrill just thinking about what I was going to eat next—pizza, burgers, fries, whatever I could pick up—or have delivered.
At the age of 25 I tipped the scale at 262 pounds. I was depressed and irritable, started losing all my friends and my girlfriend and my once-awesome band went downhill. I was constantly ill, and often called in sick to work. I had migraine headaches every day. The bills started to stack up, and I had to sell almost all of my guitars and my sports car just to catch up with rent. I felt like there was no way out. I wanted to crawl into a hole and die.
Since I didn't have extra money to buy or rent movies, I started going to the library. One day in the summer of 2002, as I breezed past the audio book section I noticed Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution. I had always heard about it, and thought, "What the heck?" I checked it out.
I listened to the cassettes over and over, five times at least, as I drove around to clients' homes (I was giving guitar lessons during the day). At first I couldn't believe my ears, because the Atkins diet tossed everything I'd ever been taught about food out the window. Slowly I realized that a controlled carbohydrate program made perfect sense. I realized that my lifestyle was unhealthy, and it was killing me both mentally and physically.
I started Induction on September 1, 2002. Before that I had never cooked, but I started making scrambled eggs for breakfast and grilled chicken and a salad for dinner. I still grab a burger for lunch, but I toss the bun. I snack on raspberries. I also keep lots of the Atkins diet AdvantageTM Bars on hand so that I don't get hungry between meals and also use the Atkins diet low carb bread and tortillas.
My biggest challenge was avoiding temptation during the holidays. Although my family was behind me 100 percent, there were so many high carb foods around! I gave in only on Christmas, and then felt so fatigued the next day that I knew I'd never cheat again.
For the time being I stick to 20 grams of Net Carbs a day, as my goal is to get down to 160 pounds. I have begun weight training and alternate between that and aerobic exercise. My energy level has skyrocketed, and my daily migraines and heartburn have disappeared. Even my skin looks better, and I swear my receding hairline has stopped receding!
As the weight fell off I regained my self-confidence. I ended an unhealthy relationship. Then I relaunched my guitar-lesson business and went nationwide by recording a videotape, "Guitar in 8 Weeks," which I sell on the Internet. I've also joined a new rock band called "Siop" and am getting ready to tour with them. There might even be a record contract in my future.
My favorite quotation is something Thomas Edison said: "Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up." Had it not been for the Atkins diet, I would have numbered among those failures.
